The Deftones are a multi-platinum selling, Grammy award winning rock band from Sacramento, California. The band consists of Chino Moreno (vocals), Stephen Carpenter (guitar), Abe Cunningham (drums), Chi Cheng (bass) and keyboarist/sampler Frank Delgado.

The founding members of the band met while skateboarding, and their first rehearsals together took place in 1989-1990 while they were still in high school. They jammed on rough versions of Danzig's "Twist Of Cain". Chi Cheng joined later when their original bassist left. Frank Delgado officially joined the band years later after collobating with and performing on much of their earlier material.

They enjoyed the early sponsorship of local favourites KoRn. With that band they also shared a fan community drawn largely from skateboarders. The band later stopped touring and and collaborating KoRn. This was due inpart that their music was being lumped into the then emerging genre of nu-metal. Fearing such an association the Deftones separated their professional careers from such bands.

They signed to Maverick Records in 1994 and released their debut album, Adrenaline, later that year.

Around The Fur was released two years later, and included a collaboration with Max Cavalera of Sepultura - "Headup" - a tribute to Dana Wells, who both Chino and Max had known.

In 2000, the band's third album, White Pony, was released. The album later went on to earn multi-platinum status as well as a Grammy award for Best Metal Performance. It is generally considered by fans to be their most mature recording. It includes a collaboration with Maynard James Keenan of Tool on the song "Passenger".

The band has worked on several side projects, including Chino's Team Sleep and Abe's Phallucy.

Their latest album Deftones (self-titled) was released in 2003. Much of the material on the album was written by guitarist Stephen Carpenter, which accounts for the albums more heavy metal feel.
