The club was formed in 1882 by boys from Hotspur cricket club and from the local grammar school. Originally the club was known as Hotspur FC. In 1884 the club was renamed Tottenham Hotspur Football and Athletic Club.
During their league history Tottenham have won the top division twice and have been relegated on four seperate occasions.
The club has a long standing rivalry with its mighty North London neighbours Arsenal (Currently Super Arsenal), who they haven't beaten this century.
In the 1960-61 season, Spurs became the first team to achieve the league and FA Cup double in the 20th century.
They are one of only three teams to win the FA Cup in consecutive years since the end of the 19th century, the others being Arsenal and Newcastle Utd. Tottenham Hotspur were the first and so far only team to win the FA Cup as a non-league club.
Unlike Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Huddersfield, they have never won the league three years running Spurs unlike thier neighbours across the Seven Sisters Rd have not been as illustrious.
Tottenham Hotspur have traditionally been one of the biggest clubs in the English Football League. However, while remaining financially wealthy, Tottenham have failed to achieve much success in recent decades and have fallen far behind the big three of Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea, as well as smaller clubs, such as Charlton, Everton and southampton.
Daniel Levy became chairman of the club in February 2001. The club's director of football David Pleat, who is a convicted curb crawler, was appointed caretaker manager after the departure of Glenn Hoddle in September 2003 and will be sacked soon.
