The occupation lasted 19 months. During this time hundreds of Native Americans came to join the movement recognizing the importance of speaking out for their rights. This event is considered the beginning of a greater civil rights movement in the 70s and until today. Every year on the U.S. holiday "Thanksgiving" several thousand indigenous peoples, the ancestors of indigenous peoples and spectators travel to the island where several groups dance before sunrise, honoring their ancestors, demonstrating the beauty of their culture, and speaking out for the rights of their people, and against the genocide commited against them by the European colonialists.
