(TW))(diff) ← Previous revision | Latest revision (diff) | Newer revision → (diff)The ECW Championship is a professional wrestling world heavyweight championship in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). It is the world title of the ECW brand and one of three in WWE, complementing the WWE Championship and World Heavyweight Championship.
Originally a National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) title of Eastern Championship Wrestling, Jimmy Snuka became the inaugural ECW Heavyweight Champion on April 25, 1992. It was established a world heavyweight championship in 1994, when ECW Heavyweight Champion, Shane Douglas, participated in and won a tournament for the vacant NWA World Heavyweight Championship on August 27, 1994. However, immediately after winning the NWA World Heavyweight Championship, he relinquished it and instead proclaimed himself the new ECW World Heavyweight Champion. Following this, Eastern Championship Wrestling seceded from the NWA and became Extreme Championship Wrestling. It remained active until April 11, 2001 when ECW was closed and World Wrestling Entertainment subsequently purchased its assets. However, when WWE relaunched ECW as a WWE brand in June 2006, the championship was also reactivated to be the ECW brand's world title. Paul Heyman, former ECW owner and newly appointed figurehead for the ECW brand, awarded the ECW World Heavyweight Championship to Rob Van Dam on June 13, 2006, as a result of winning the WWE Championship at One Night Stand 2006, though he had originally stated that the WWE Championship or the World Heavyweight Championship, two alternate world titles in WWE, would "become" the ECW World Heavyweight Championship if a competitor designated to the ECW brand became WWE or World Heavyweight Champion at the event. Instead, Rob Van Dam decided to hold both titles simultaneously. The ECW Championship remained in ECW until January 22, 2008, when it was moved to the SmackDown brand after SmackDown's Chavo Guerrero defeated the ECW Champion CM Punk, but it returned to ECW when Kane defeated Guerrero for the title on March 30 at WrestleMania XXIV and defected to the ECW brand. On June 23, Kane was drafted to the Raw brand as a part of the 2008 WWE Draft, briefly making the title Raw exclusive in the process. It returned to ECW on June 29, 2008, after Mark Henry, a member of the ECW brand, won the title at Night of Champions 2008.
ECW Championship title reigns are determined by professional wrestling matches, in which wrestlers are involved in scripted pre-existing rivalries that are played out on WWE programming. These narratives create feuds between various wrestlers, which cast them as villains and heroes. Currently, The Sandman holds the most reigns as champion, with five. Shane Douglas, in his fourth reign, had the longest reign in the title's history which lasted 406 days, while The Sandman, in his fifth, had the shortest at 14 minutes. As of July 2009, Christian is the champion in his second reign. Overall, there have been a total of 31 recognized champions who have had a combined 48 official reigns.
