The R.E.D. Album is the upcoming fourth studio album by rapper Game. It is set to be released on February 16, 2010, by Interscope Records.
Background
Game planned to retire after finishing his 2008 album LAX although he mentioned in interviews that there was a small chance of a fourth album if he could get Dr. Dre to executive produce the album and if he could work with former N.W.A. members. He also stated that it would be titled "D.O.C." (Diary Of Compton)
In an interview with HipHopDX in November 2009, Game explained why he put off the "D.O.C." for a later release. "The way it happened, I was starting to work on D.O.C., right? But, like I told you last time, in order to record The D.O.C., I need to be in the studio with D.O.C., with Dre, with Cube, with Snoop - 'cause it's the Diary of Compton. I really want it to sound after you finish listening to The D.O.C., which will probably be recorded and put out by the end of my career, at some point, when I can get in with those guys and really focus on that project. I want you to feel like you're from Compton after you hear it. You felt everything that I felt and knew everything that I knew; I want it to just sound like you were me. I want you to feel like you grew up with me. You're from Compton . I want you to be on The Diary Of Compton. I want it to be that intimate and that crazy. So to pull off that concept, the key elements were missing at the time when I started the album, so I stopped that project."
In an interview in June 2008, Game asserted that Interscope wanted him to release another album in early 2009 rather than retire. Although he wanted to retire, he expressed the will to put off retirement to record another album after LAX.
In a recent interview with hiphollywood.com Game announced that he has changed his name to just "Game" and has also changed the name of his album to "The R.E.D. Album" He said "It's going to be the most hood album." Game also announced that two singles will be released in the weeks to follow.
Recording
Maestro asserted that Game was, in March 2009, recording this album in Atlanta.
The album is slated to hit shelves in early December. "He's slated for an early December release," Rosemond said of the album.
In a May 14th interview with MTV, Game had this to say about his upcoming LP, people think the R.E.D. stands for gangbanging. I am what I am. ... R.E.D. — that's rededicated. Rededicated to hip-hop ... to my 'hood, Compton. Rededicated to my family, rededicated to everything."
On August 8, 2009, while still on the Australian leg of his L.A.X. tour Game wrote on Maestro's Twitter page calling him 'his new favorite hitmaker' and stating his track will be featured on The R.E.D. Album..
Cool explained. The first day we went to L.A., we had already done a bunch of shit for him, and we’re just playing ‘em ‘All right, I’m ready to go in the booth.’ Boom, we knocked out like seven different ideas so me and Dre are like ‘Fuck, we done let all of our arsenal off in this first night!’ Next day, ‘What else you got? Let’s get it going!’ We let off all our arsenal, he recorded to seven, eight records on the first night. Laid a verse, a hook here, two verses here, a whole song. I’m like, ‘Yo Dre, he’s recording to everything we did on the way up. Damn, now we gotta start up some new shit with him.’ Certain artists we just have that great chemistry with, man and Game is definitely one of ‘em.
Game revealed to MTV that the upcoming album would drop by the end of 2009. He's already enlisted producers such as Timbaland, and former Aftermath producer Mike Lynn.
During an interview with XXL Magazine online in early October. Canadian producer Boi-1da, said he had been in LA with Game, and that he had 'recorded a song to a few of my beats'.
