Previously, Hurley played drums in the Chicago metalcore band Racetraitor, and in 1999 played drums on Vegan Reich's final LP. He also played drums in various bands that included Pete Wentz. He did not join Fall Out Boy until their first full length album, Take This To Your Grave, to replace two members who were let go from the band. As a child Hurley considered himself a trouble maker who drank and ignored authority. He is now a vegan, and leads a straight edge lifestyle (or a lifestyle of abstinence in relation to tobacco, alcohol and recreational drug use). Hurley is a comicbook enthusiast, plays video games such as The Legend of Zelda, and is the second oldest member of the band. Hurley plays C&C Custom drums and Sabian cymbals.

He enjoys Star Wars, often tries to take time out to read daily, and has been straight edge for ten years.
