OpenRaster is a file format proposed for the common exchange of layered images between raster graphics editors. It has been meant as a replacement for later versions of the Adobe PSD format, is still in development and so far has gathered very limited support in only a few programs.

Background

For many years the Adobe Photoshop PSD file format was freely and widely used as an open, cross-application file format for layered images. Adobe supported this by publishing the format's specifications. However, by 2006 Adobe had restricted further updated specifications and documentation to those who agreed they would implement them only in programs (mostly plugins) which function with Adobe software products. The OpenRaster format was proposed at the first Libre Graphics Meeting which was held at Lyon, France in the spring of 2006 and is drawn from the open document format, but this has been criticized as too complex.

Application support

OpenRaster has limited support in only a few graphics programs and among these its cross-application use is not seamless.

Application Status
MyPaint Default working file format.
GIMP Planned + external plug-in.
Krita Supported.
DrawPile Basic (development version)
