I concur, you may increase the block if you see fit. I err on the side of caution for proxies. As to IRC, I usually find it distracting or unproductive (meaning, no one talks to me :")... as I have a TV tuner in my computer I can deal with one distraction in the background at a time. I will certainly reconsider my IRC and proxy policy. :"D - RoyBoy 20:15, 2 November 2005 (UTC)

My Talk page

Somebody told me that a little while ago, and I slimmed it down. When I tried it on an 800x600 screen in College it looked OK, but perhaps it depends upon the preferences as to font sizes, etc. Any advice as to what I should do? --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 21:24, 2 November 2005 (UTC)

reblocking for a week

A couple of points for you to consider. If you look at the last block - which was for 2 days, the vandal stayed away for quite a bit longer. It's perfectly possible that a 15 min block will have the same net effect as a week long one. Also check the edit history. There are some good edits there as well as some vandalism ones. The IP resolves to the Humanities & Science Institute in Arizona. Presumably this institute has hundreds of students, of which one is a vandal, and probably one other is potential collaterial damage.

Simple vandalism is annoying but pretty easy to correct. It's best to keep responses to it measured. Having said that it doesn't actually matter in this case because you haven't really reblocked him for a week. Well i don't think so anyway. When two blocks are in operation on the same IP the IP will be unblocked as soon as the shorter block expires. In order to extend a block, you therefore need to unblock the IP then reblock for the longer time period. But i don't think it is necessary in this case. If he comes back tomorrow, we can reblock him then. Theresa Knott (a tenth stroke) 22:31, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

Did you mean "Do not"? The principles pertaining to the 32 k rule apply and also the reasons and 125 k is too long. I could live with 60 k or so. Some users cannot edit long pages. I would not object if you reinstated some of the talk from the archive. I archived to the point where others were discussing archiving so my view was not unilateral.--A Y Arktos (Talk) 23:26, 3 November 2005 (UTC) I appreciate you had recently "aggressively" and selectively archived but perhaps to clarify, I don't think it was aggressive enough - as I said feel free to modify archive 18 and reinstate discussion you think neeeds to be visible on the talk page to continue.--A Y Arktos (Talk) 23:35, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

re: ozone depletion article

Didn't know where else to respond to, so I responded here:

The 6500 tons vs 600,000,000 tons isn't meaningless, the CFC's don't break down ozone until they themselves break down into chemicals that can deplete the Ozone, of which 600,000,000 tons are released every year from natural sources (compared to 6500 tons from manmade sources). That is what I was pointing out.

And the level of Water Evaporation has plenty to do with the temperature of the Stratosphere, and the temperature of the stratosphere has plenty to do with the breakdown of ozone.

I am simply trying to give an alternative hypothesis for the thinning of the ozone above the antarctic, which is supported by more and more scientists, and WMC didn't want to hear about it.

Barwick 04:27, 6 November 2005 (UTC) Sorry, I think that should be an automatic thing that's inserted onto all blank sheets on wikipedia (put the Barwick 04:27, 6 November 2005 (UTC) automatically on all new posts maybe, and let the user delete it if they don't want, I dunno)

Anyhow, I meant to say that 600,000,000 tons of Chlorine (which is one of the main ozone-depleting chemicals) enters the atmosphere from natural sources every year (reference below)

It is generally agreed that natural sources of tropospheric chlorine (volcanoes, ocean spray, etc.) are four to five orders of magnitude (1,d000 to 10,000 times) larger than man-made sources - Maduro, R. A.; Schauerhammer, R. The holes in the ozone scare. Washington, DC: 21st Century Science Associates; 1992.

http://www.sepp.org/ozone/ozonefranklin.html

Barwick 04:46, 6 November 2005 (UTC) Oh no, we don't *know* that there were old comets, we know that there are comet and meteor impacts around the solar system, and the "old" part comes from the ASSUMPTION that those planets/moons/layered strata are old. Scientists (Carl Sagan himself, one of the most strong-willed evolutionists and old-earth theorists in history) has said that the chances for a hyperbolic comet becoming a short-period comet is 1 in 1,000,000.

So unless roughly 200,000,000 comets came around these parts within the last 12,000 years and suddenly stopped in the last 6,000 or so since humans have been watching & recording the skies, then the 200+ short period comets have an origin other than what evolutionists and old-earth theorists believe, and perhaps the creation science standpoint is right on this one.

And on the chlorine thing: Let's assume that every single molecule of CFC's makes it into the stratosphere. Assuming most of the natural chlorine never reaches the stratosphere, do you think that for every 1 ton of CFC's that reach the atmosphere, that at least .001% of the natural Chlorine ends up reaching the stratosphere (making at least a 1:1 ratio of manmade to natural chlorine, and that's assuming the BEST reach for CFC's, and a DISMAL rate for natural Chlorine)

Barwick 14:49, 7 November 2005 (UTC) The oort cloud. That's absolutely hilarious. Quite possibly the most contradictory thing scientists could ever come up with. Here we go:

The oort cloud: something we can't see, have never observed, and can only observe (what we believe to be) the effects of. God (and creation): something we can't see, have never observed, and can only observe (what we believe to be) the effects of.

They grasp onto one with all the fury of a bulldog, and the other they completely reject. And yet there is many orders of magnitude more evidence for God and creation than there are for the mysterious oort cloud.

I find it hilarious, scientists, acting on presuppositions that the universe is billions of years old, see the fact that comets (if allowed to exist for billions of years) would have been completely obliterated billions of years ago. So they conjecture some mysterious magical cloud far away from the earth, so far that we can't observe it, and say "every once in a while, a comet forms in that sucker and it flies in the direction of the inner solar system". Give me a freaking break. The oort cloud is about the absolute worst piece of crap science that exists in the universe today.

Barwick 20:18, 7 November 2005 (UTC) Ok, you show me how this guy PROVED that these comets ORIGINATED from the Oort Cloud. Not "passed through" or something like that, but that these comets were once part of the Oort Cloud. I've got plenty of evidence that shows that a planet that has liquid water on it AND an atmosphere, is the source for comets in our solar system. But I'd like to see your evidence first.

Barwick 20:42, 7 November 2005 (UTC) I've already been to the Talk: Oort Cloud section, discussing it there...

Beets

You feel about beets the way I feel about liver. But you would like them the way my Mom prepares them. She uses corn starch and converts the runny juice into kind of a syrup. It's yummy. :b Wahkeenah 14:09, 11 November 2005 (UTC)

I'll have to get the exact beets recipe from Mom over Thanksgiving. Regarding liver, I think it was Johnny Carson who once commented that no matter how you disguise it (with onions or whatever), liver still comes out as liver. On Thanksgiving, I'll have the turkey giblets, which includes a liver, and that's my limit of that alleged food for the year. Wahkeenah 17:51, 11 November 2005 (UTC)

OK, here it is:

Harvard Beets
2 tablespoons butter or margarine (optional)
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1/4 cup sugar (another version says 1/3 cup)
1/4 teaspoon salt (optional)
2 tablespoons vinegar
1 can beets
Melt the butter in an appropriate pan.
Add cornstarch, sugar, salt, vinegar plus the beetjuice from the can, stirring all until dissolved.
Cook, stirring constantly, until thick.
Add drained beets, re-heat until hot.

I assure you, it's as good as beets can get. :b Wahkeenah 13:47, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

Hi RoyBoy, Sorry to bother you when your on RC patrol, but I just came acroos Kertarajasa, was going to tag it for speedy but I'm not sure if that's right. I'm just wondering if you could look at it. Minor issue re: reverting

It's only a minor issue, but: I changed a dead link of my own link, anonymously, on the Emoticons page. Certainly, an anonymous IP changing a link may be suspicious, but if you had checked you would have seen that the old link was dead and the new one was legit. Features and admins

That'd be great. I actually don't use Goings-on; I prefer to go to the main pages. For admins, you're right that I use Misplaced Pages:Recently created admins. For articles, I use Misplaced Pages:Featured article candidates/Featured log. For lists, I use Misplaced Pages:Featured list candidates/Featured log. For pictures, I use Misplaced Pages:Featured pictures candidates/November-2005 (you have to be careful with pictures to only list those that were promoted, since both are listed together)

As far as Seawifs, it got listed last week. I've had to be careful about that in the past (another good reason not to use Goings-on...) Again, thanks for offering to do this; I appreciate the help. Welcome aboard! Ral315 (talk) 04:39, 22 November 2005 (UTC)

It's tough with the images down...it's the one in the gallery marked 'Primary production'. As far as what to do, generally just posting a link on the all stories page is good enough- see the way it was done this week. The method that you cited generally was something that I did after reading through the articles, closer to press time. You're welcome to move them as such, but there's really no need to. Ral315 (talk) 05:39, 22 November 2005 (UTC)
Oh, and the reason it was posted last week was that usually, the Signpost isn't published until later in the day on Monday (last week, actually, it was very early Tuesday morning due to site downtime). Ral315 (talk) 05:40, 22 November 2005 (UTC)

If it's any consolation, this isn't the ultimate reason I'm fed up. See the last post by Barwick in "fetus, embryo, and humanesss," or Friday's edit war with GE, for the real reasons I'm shaking my head and saying, "Why bother?" This is has been a long time coming. -Kyd 16:28, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the WikiThanks. I was just overreacting. This time of the year only succeeds in making me feel like a turd. I was overdue for some sort of freak-out sometime, somewhere, and it happened to strike on Misplaced Pages. I've pulled this before, though, so I should probably keep good to my word and leave (or, at least, pull back from major edits, and just watch for vandals). As for the revision, I'm not the sort of person who's going to force the issue. If it's not up to snuff, I guess I'll have to deal with that. In my own defense, however, I did present the new version for review at least a day before posting it. I don't make major changes without submitting them for peer review first. But maybe I was a little too enthusiatic in "forcing" productivity in the midst of an edit war. This revision has been chugging along at a snail's pace for the last couple of months. I'll let everyone else decide which version, or which combination of them, is the better. -Kyd 17:16, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

I've been meaning to thank you a long time for The 800 Club (which, for the cleverness of its name alone, deserves praise). Teeny resolutions and their hold-outs thank you. -Kyd 18:05, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

Moved this from the Abortion Talk page 'cause it was getting too conversational:

"Not going to be chased away by edit wars, vandalism, and simple misunderstandings, either. Don't blame yourself for the fact that you ran into an emotional wreck, RB. I should be setting an example, you know, what with complaining about the lack of communication demonstrated by some editors."

Hey, what can I say? You were the first person to ever sign my talk page (Welcome Wagon excepted), and you're a fellow Canuck, so it's not like I can stay upset. Plus, it's unproductive for otherwise productive editors to, you know, have disagreements. Or, maybe it is, because it's at least called to attention the failings of the ABC revision.

Blade Runner? Add to my list of must-read/must-see dystopian sci-fi. I have considered editing in fandom (in my case, say, Harry Potter or Tolkien) -- but conflicts about whether the Balrog has wings or what side Snape is on are stupid, really, because such gulfs shouldn't divide people with a common interest. Conflict within abortion is to be expected -- it comes with the territory -- so it's easier to work with that in mind. It's a very high-tension article. There's always people coming in, unfamiliar with the established consensus, who want to add their piece, not to mention the stream of graffiti.

As for ABC, I don't know if I'm one for the job, although I wouldn't mind working with you. Evidently, you've done more research, and you're more familiar with this topic. There's some good sources in both versions, though, so a combination of the two seems ideal. -Kyd 18:59, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

Re: Sandbox

Yup, I love it, you crafty son-of-a-bitch. :) Need any more help before the move? I get off work in about a half hour. -Parallel or Together? 06:27, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

Adding names after the fact is fine with me. If you want to suggest it on the meta, then go ahead and I'll just pre-record my vote in favor of your proposal. After hopping on the 1pm train for Tokyo tomorrow, I will be without a computer until mid-January. I am pretty much fine with however it turns out, barring changing the recipient. Hope the rest of the holiday season goes well and that your vacation was nice. -Parallel or Together? 06:39, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

Thank you so much

When I think of all of us who worked together so hard for so long, I think of the line from Henry V We few, we happy few, we band of brothers...

It was a fun ride, wasn't it? So thanks you guys, that meant a lot to me.

Who did the Thelonious with a mop artwork? Brilliant! FeloniousMonk 08:16, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

No worries.

I probably should have checked your contribs to find it :) Just make sure and mention it next week. And my apologies for not noticing. By the way, do portals now have their own page for being featured? Ral315 (talk) 19:17, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

Well, it worked out well this week, since I really had nothing to do yesterday :) Ral315 (talk) 05:08, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
