Russ Nelson is an American computer programmer. He is a founding board member of the Open Source Initiative.

In February 2005, he briefly became the president of the Open Source Initiative. He resigned on February 23, 2005 because a posting on his personal blog was thought by some to be racist.. The article, entitled "Blacks Are Lazy", was renamed to "Blacks Are Lazy?" and revised.

Back in the eights, Nelson was the original developer of Freemacs (a variant of Emacs used by FreeDOS) and Painter's Apprentice, which he describes as a MacPaint clone.

He is a pacifist Quaker and a member of the Libertarian Party of the United States.
