The trilogy consists of The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and the upcoming Mockingjay, which will be released on August 24, 2010. The first two books were each The New York Times best sellers.
Characters
Katniss Everdeen The protagonist of the novels, she fights in the hunger games in both novels and constantly battles between her feelings for both Peeta and Gale. She and Peeta both win the hunger games in the first novel. She is the sister of Primrose Everdeen, and is highly skilled with a bow and arrow. She is from District 12.
Peeta Mellark The male contestant from district 12.
Gale Hawthorne Katniss' friend and fellow huntsman.
Haymitch Abernathy The only district 12 hunger games winner until Katniss and Peeta win. He is also the mentor of the district 12 contestants.
The Hunger Games
Katniss is a sixteen year-old girl in district 12 who struggles to survive on a constant basis. She hunts animals, despite it being forbidden, in order to feed her family. Although she has a greater chance of enging up in the hunger games, it is her sister Primrose who is chosen, forcing her to take her sister's place.
Catching fire
Previous winners of the hunger games are forced to reenter the arena. This forces Katniss to enter as she is the only District 12 female winner.
Mockingjay
Mockingjay will be realeased in 2010.
Film adaptation
Lionsgate Entertainment acquired worldwide distribution rights to a film adaptation of The Hunger Games, which will be produced by Nina Jacobson's Color Force production company. Collins will adapt the novel for film herself.
