Little Green Footballs mostly concerns Middle Eastern affairs and terrorism, with occasional mention of bicycle sports and space news.
Little Green Footballs, like the man behind it, has evolved over the years. Originally, LGF was originally another blog on computing with a few humorous news items. The September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attacks changed all that; and LGF became a became a warblog. Johnson was for many years a professional guitarist who accompanied top jazz artists like Al Jarreau both onstage and in the studio. In the 1980s he was a trailblazing computer programmer and was one of the first to code for the Atari.
On Thursday, October 16, 2003, Little Green Footballs was subjected to a Denial of Service attack along with other sites on the Hosting Matters system, of which the whole system went down for a few hours.
Charles Johnson writes:
- The Denial of Service attack that hit the Hosting Matters system last night and took down LGF, Instapundit, and many other blogs, was directed at Aaron Weisburd's Internet Haganah by a group of Al Qaeda-affiliated web sites. Here is Weisburd's explanation of what happened and why: Al Qaeda Internet attack .
Registered user Weisburd says that the attacks were carried out by supporters of a number of Al Qaida-affiliated forums registered to Saudis and running in Malaysia who declared an online "Jihad" against the Haganah blog. The result was that the sites dropped offline, and four of them remain offline.
Although the blog has been called conservative, some say that Johnson was "a leftist until he got mugged by September 11." Blog poster "Bleeding heart conservative" says that LGF reflects "reality and pragmatism to bend to the occasional aspiration to idealism, and protects us simultaneously from utopian fruitlessness," and asks why such an approach should have no place on the left.
Charles Johnson coined the term "idiotarian."
