WYCC is the broadcast call letters of a Public Broadcasting System television station in Chicago, Illinois. It brands itself as Wise TV WYCC and is found on analog channel 20 and digital channel 21. Its transmitter is atop the John Hancock Center, one of the tallest buildings in the United States. Chicago has another Public Broadcasting System television station, WTTW.

The television station is funded and governed by guidelines provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Funding is also provided by member donations, collected throughout the year and through pledge drives.

WYCC claims to be the largest minority-owned and minority-operated public television station. It also claims to be, according to the Nielsen Station Index, the fastest growing television station in its Chicago market area. It reaches 3.5 million homes in Chicago and 6 million homes in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin. It averages 750,000 viewers each television broadcast season.

Affiliations

WYCC has a special relationship with the City Colleges of Chicago in designing programming. The television station offers distance learning courses, when viewed may be credited towards an associate degree at any of the City Colleges of Chicago. The city colleges also uses WYCC to air informational programs for neighborhood outreach and community service.

WYCC also has a special relationship with public schools in the region through the Illinois High School Association. The television station retains exclusive rights to air high school athletic programming including the football championships and boys and girls basketball tournaments.

Programming

British and Irish

WYCC is the principal purveyor of British and Irish television programs in the area. Ballykissangel, an Irish comedy soap opera is aired twice weekly on WYCC. Early episodes are centered around the tortured love story between a pub owner and a Roman Catholic priest. Other favorites include British comedies: Are You Being Served? and Last of the Summer Wine. The television station markets its British comedy block of programming as Britcoms.

Children

As a Public Broadcasting Service television station, WYCC provide children's programming despite its overall focus on adult education. Favorites include Clifford the Big Red Dog whose lead character was voiced by John Ritter.

News

WYCC offers comprehensive international and national news coverage. It offers BBC World News broadcast from London and Washington twice daily as well as a news program broadcast from Ireland. Popular news talk shows include those hosted by Charlie Rose and Tavis Smiley. Attempts at local news programming have been made with a talk show focusing on Illinois politics, broadcast from the floors of the Illinois General Assembly in Springfield.
