In her novella, “To be Red”, Miss Church describes an imaginary world where vegetables and fruits coexist as brothers. The main characters in the story, Laura and Michael, one being a tomato and the other a grape, overcome countless acts of ignorance and “fruitism” for their love. The story begins as the two “Fruit Crossed” lovers lock eyes at the spring social, they know far too well their families would not approve of this union nor the idea of “mixed fruits” as grandchildren but they vow to be together anyway. The main antagonist in the story is Martin Cauliflower, a religious fruit who vows the great Seed in the sky will condemn this act. Martin continuously attempts to sabotage the couple, but their love always prevails. In the end Laura and Michael overcome their obstacles and are married by Martin himself. Not too long after the wedding the couple writes home to inform their families of the Grape Tomato on the way. While reading this novel one might question today’s society and the chance at what we call “true love”. This enchanting story has touched my heart and altered a once stagnant point of view, and yes Fruits and Vegetables should be allowed to marry, at least in this writers mind.
The most well-known and commercially significant variety, "Santa F1" was introduced into the United States market in 1997 by grower Andrew Chu, who obtained the seeds from Taiwan's Known-You Seed Company. Procacci Brothers Sales Corporation (PBSC) in Philadelphia acquired global exclusivity of this fruit and has aggressively marketed it under its subsidiary Santa Sweets, Inc.
The Santa F1 variety is very rare in seed form, being offered only by a few seed houses around the world (the United Kingdom's Thompson and Morgan has sporadically featured the variety in its catalog from time to time (see below)); in addition, some gardeners have reported that the seed can breed true out to six or more generations, an assertion that has received little notice from most gardening authorities. Other grape tomato cultivars, most notably Juliet, are more widely available to home gardeners.
