The HTC Evo 4G (codename: Supersonic) is a smartphone developed by the HTC Corporation. A joint press release by HTC Corporation and Sprint Nextel was given on 23 March 2010 at the CTIA 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada, and will launch June 4th, 2010.
EVO is powered by a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor and runs the Android operating system, version 2.1. It includes a TFT LCD capacitive touchscreen screen, an 8-megapixel camera in the rear and a 1.3 megapixel camera in the front. The HTC Sense user interface will also be included.
The Android operating system is able to take advantage of the Snapdragon processor's onboard video chipset, enabling the HTC Evo to capture and playback video at 720p high-definition resolution. The HTC Evo 4G generated the greatest degree of market anticipation for an Android phone announcement since Google's Nexus One.
Sprint confirmed a $199.99 price tag with two-year contract(After a $100 dollar mail in rebate at Sprint stores, though this charge is instantly withdrawn at other retail locations like Best Buy and Radio Shack).
Pricing
Priced at $199.99 with a two-year contract, the EVO is also offered for $449.99 without starting a new 2-year or extending existing agreements with Sprint. A special mandatory "premium data" add-on specifically designed for the handset will be $10 a month in addition to an unlimited data plan, and includes uncapped 3G/4G data. The mobile hotspot feature on the phone, where up to eight devices can use the 4G services will be an additional $29.99 a month.
4G/WiMAX technology
The HTC Evo 4G is America's first 3G/4G Android smartphone, and will be available exclusively from Sprint Nextel on June 4th, 2010. The HTC Evo will be able to connect to Sprint's growing network of 4G access points which use WiMAX technology (802.16e) to enable high-speed Internet connectivity with average 3-6 Mbit/s download speeds. This will provide users of the device with the ability to download music, pictures, files, or videos in seconds instead of minutes, as well as the ability to watch streaming high-quality HD video on the go. The device also includes built-in support for creating a mobile Wi-Fi access point on demand, allowing up to eight Wi-Fi-enabled devices to simultaneously connect to and use Sprint's 4G network while on the go. The HTC Evo 4G also includes a 1.3-megapixel, front-facing camera, presumably used for video calls and other video streaming uses.
Focus on wireless entertainment
HTC Evo 4G will be powered by a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. A major focus on entertainment is one of the primary goals of the device. It features the HTC Sense UI, an 8.0-megapixel auto-focus camera/camcorder with support for recording HD-capable video at 720p and a forward-facing, 1.3-megapixel camera. A large, vibrant 4.3-inch display with 480x800 WVGA resolution will allow for viewing of HD video content from Google's YouTube. A built-in kickstand has also been included, with the goal of making it easy to watch videos and view media hands-free. The 3.5-mm headset jack and micro-HDMI (HDMI type d) output allows for connection to a full-sized TV for 720p video playback (with an optional HDMI cable).
Release date
Sprint will release the HTC Evo on June 4, 2010.
Radio Shack and Best Buy are currently accepting pre-orders for the HTC EVO.
