Richlands is a town in Tazewell County, Virginia, United States. The population was 4,144 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Bluefield, WV-VA micropolitan area which has a population of 107,578.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.7 square miles (6.9 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 4,144 people, 1,882 households, and 1,223 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,565.7 people per square mile (603.8/km²). There were 2,137 housing units at an average density of 807.4/sq mi (311.4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.75% White, 0.05% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.19% from other races, and 0.39% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.34% of the population.

There were 1,882 households out of which 25.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.7% were married couples living together, 12.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.0% were non-families. 32.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 2.76.

In the town the population was spread out with 20.1% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 81.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $23,712, and the median income for a family was $30,257. Males had a median income of $30,682 versus $18,670 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,548. About 13.6% of families and 17.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.1% of those under age 18 and 16.9% of those age 65 or over.

This little town will nickel and dime you to death. They think that big government is the way to go and want you to pay for it in taxes and very high power bills. If you are thinking of moving here please do yourself a favor and stay away. Its a corupt town that needs to be exposed.
