Franchise history

San Jose Sharks started playing in NHL in the 1991-92 NHL season. The teams nickname, Sharks, was chosen from 5000 entries submitted by mail. The team played their first two seasons in Cow Palace in San Francisco, California and then moved to the newly built San Jose Arena (which is now called HP Pavillion) in 1993.

For first two seasons, Sharks were one of last teams in NHL, as it often happens to expansion teams. In the 1992-93 NHL season they had NHL all-time-high 71 losses. The third, 1993-94 season, was more successful. Sharks finished the regular season with a 33-35-16 record, making the playoffs with 82 points. That was 58 points more than in the previous season, an NHL all-time record. In the first round of playoffs, they met NHL regular-season champions Detroit Red Wings and won the series 4-3. In the second round, they would lose to Toronto Maple Leafs 2-4. They made the second round of playoffs in the next, 1994-95 NHL season as well. The key Sharks players at this time were the goalie Arturs Irbe, the defensemen Sandis Ozolinsh and the forward Igor Larionov.

The next, 1995-96 season, was not as good as the previous two. Sharks finished last in the Pacific Division of NHL, not making playoffs. The team also underwent major changes. During the season, they traded Ozolinsh and Larionov. Irbe, who had suffered an off-ice injury, was released at the end of the season. Instead, the team acquired the forward Owen Nolan and several other players.

Sharks returned to NHL playoffs two years later, in the 1997-98 NHL season, with the goalie Mike Vernon whom they acquired from Detroit Red Wings after a season in which Vernon won Conn Smythe Trophy with Red Wings. For the next 5 years, Sharks always made playoffs but did not advance past the second round. In the 2000-01 season, the Russian goalie Evgeni Nabokov became the starter for Sharks. The team also acquired the Finnish star forward Teemu Selanne who played for the team until 2003.

The 2003-04 NHL season has been the most successful one for Sharks so far. They finished the regular season as the second best team in Western Conference and are playing in their first-ever Conference Finals against Calgary Flames.
