Pendleton is a graduate of Yale College. As an actor, he has appeared on Broadway in The Diary of Anne Frank, Grand Hotel, Doubles, Goodtime Charley, An American Millionaire ,The Little Foxes, Hail Scrawdyke!, and as Motel the Tailor in the premiere of Fiddler on the Roof.
Pendleton is also an accomplished playwright, of Uncle Bob, Booth, and Orson's Shadow, all of which have received critically-acclaimed off-Broadway productions. As a director, Pendleton has staged work on and off Broadway including The Little Foxes by Lillian Hellman, Spoils of War by Michael Weller, The Runner Stumbles by Milan Stitt and War in Paramus by Barbara Dana.
He served as Artistic Director for Circle Repertory Company with associate artistic director Lynn Thigpen.
He won the 1981 Tony Award for his direction of The Little Foxes," which starred Elizabeth Taylor and Maureen Stapleton.
Mr. Pendleton has an artistic relationship with Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago. He established the relationship by directing Say Goodnight, Gracie for the 1979-1980 season. In addition to directing at Steppenwolf, Mr. Pendleton has appeared as an actor in such Steppenwolf productions as Uncle Vanya, Valparaiso and Educating Rita (also Off-Broadway).
His film work is as diverse as A Beautiful Mind, What's Up, Doc?, The Front Page, Mr. & Mrs. Bridge and The Muppet Movie.
Notoriously, he played a supporting role in Skidoo (1968), a movie frequently cited as the worst film in the careers of most of its participants including Jackie Gleason, Groucho Marx, Carol Channing, and Otto Preminger.
