Psi Sigma Phi (ΨΣΦ) Multicultural Fraternity was founded December 12, 1990 at Montclair State University and New Jersey City University. It is the nation's first and only fraternity founded under the ideal of multicultural membership. The Eighteen Founding Fathers established Psi Sigma Phi as a service oriented multicultural organization. Multiculturalism is not indicative of the physical composition of an organization on a chapter or national level; it is a state of mind-a philosophy that embraces any and all aspects of cultural identity with unconditional respect and equality. The organization is currently undergoing rapid expansion, as it begins to spread across the U.S.

History

The founding fathers of Psi Sigma Phi understood that simply accepting all cultures does not equal embracing them and in a highly interdependent and hyphenated society, they needed an organization that embraced multiculturalism. With that notion in mind, a brotherhood was forged and Psi Sigma Phi Multicultural Fraternity, Inc. was born on December 12, 1990.

At the time, male college students were limited by the availability of fraternities and were forced to select between Latin-American, African-American, Asian-American and mainstream fraternities. Psi Sigma Phi’s Founders felt the need to create an organization which not only offered a bond of unity and lasting friendship, but a fraternity which would emphasize the importance of multiculturalism in the lives of today's college students.

Co-founded at Montclair State University and New Jersey City University (at the time Jersey City State College) as a service-oriented, multicultural organization, Psi Sigma Phi Multicultural Fraternity Inc. has managed to maintain its own identity among Greek organizations throughout the nation. By offering an eternal bond of unity and maintaining its multicultural awareness, Psi Sigma Phi has enjoyed the success that its Founders had envisioned.

About Psi Sigma Phi

Mission

Psi Sigma Phi's fraternal goal is to establish a unique bond among men of different cultures. The anatomy of this bond is hard work, sacrifice and courage from all of its brothers - brothers who together strive to break social fears and ignorance. This fraternity only opens its arms to those who will continue this ideology. Its small size has allowed the cultivation of brotherhood to an unparalleled level. Brothers remain truly united for life and alumni are just as present and active as any undergraduate member. Although the exact demographics of the fraternity are difficult to gauge, brothers represent ALL backgrounds, religions, cultures, and creeds.

Cause and Effect

Psi Sigma Phi's mission is not to increase membership, it is to open eyes and to broaden the views of men in our society. To create an opportunity for communities to feel at home in a racial and cultural utopia, a microcosm of a unified America.

Whether they are the cause or the effect, anytime the cultural divide has been breached in any facet, they are successful for their purpose is not to increase in size, but in influence.

Philanthropy

Psi Sigma Phi's national philanthropy is the Kidney and Urology Foundation. Other services participated on a national level include:

City Year Multiple Sclerosis Walk (New Jersey) Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (Walk) Hyacinth AIDS Walk SHU 500 (Seton Hall University) Food Bank of New Jersey American Cancer Society Valerie Fund Newark Soup Kitchens Dove Services (Seton Hall University) Adopt a Highway Program
