The term is a french word for coffee-tray, used in the parisian bars and other places in which this genre was born (mainly the café-chantants).
It is also the name of a well-known Broadway musical (see Cabaret (musical)), from which a famous film was derived, with Liza Minnelli. The film has been selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.
