The format follows the format used in the The Times Index. The Times Index goes back to 1785 and the other newspaper templates Cite news and Harvard reference do not convey the same information.

Notes
- article name
- This is the title of the article
- author
- Give the author name including the first name or initials
- section
- The section in which the article appears, e.g news, business, sport, letters to the editor etc.
- day_of_week
- Ideally give this in the short form Mon, Tue etc.
- date
- The full date the article was published
- page_number
- The page number of the article. If the article spans multiple pages, use page_numbers instead.
- page_numbers
- The page numbers of the article. If the article is only on one page, use page_number instead.
- issue
- The issue number of the newspaper
- column
- The column the article begins on, the first column is a, the second is b and so on
