The University of North Sumatra (Template:Lang-id) or USU is a public university located in the city of Medan in North Sumatra, Indonesia.

It is situated in Padang Bulan, in the Medan Baru subdistrict of Medan, close to the City Centre, with a total area of 122 hectares. Due to an increase in student numbers, a new campus is being constructed in Kwala Bekala, 15km distant, with a 300 hectare campus area.

Its rectors serve eight year renewable terms.

History

The University foundation was established shortly following Indonesian independence, with the idea first suggested in 1947 by Governor Abdul Hakim. The University's Foundation was established 4th June 1952, and the first faculty, Medicine, was established 20th August 1952 with 27 students (two female). Law was added in 1954, with both Education and Agriculture following in 1956. The University was inaugurated as Indonesia's seventh public University by Indonesian President Sukarno on November 20th 1957. A campus in Kutaraja (now Banda Aceh) was inaugurated by Sukarno in 1959, with the University's Economics faculty, along with an Engineering faculty at the Medan campus. Veterinary medicine was added in Kutaraja in 1960. Since that time faculties have been established in Dentistry (1961), Literature (1965), Mathematics and Natural Science (1965), Social and Political Science (1982), Postgraduate Studies (1992), Public Health (1993), Pharmacy (2007), and Psychology (2008).

The University acquired State University (BHMN) status in 2003, a form of government-owned private company, a status that it shares with eight other universities.

The University has spawned several other Higher Education institutions - the Banda Aceh campus became Syiah Kuala University, while the Education faculty became the State University of Medan, while Medan Polytechnic (Politeknik Negeri Medan) was previously Politeknik USU.
