It runs from the Stratosphere at its north to the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino to its south. Las Vegas's McCarran International Airport is just to the south of the Strip.
The strip reportedly was named by a Los Angeles cop, Guy McAfee, after the Sunset Strip in his hometown. The first hotel to be built on what is today's strip was the El Rancho Vegas, which opened on April 3, 1941. (It was destroyed by fire in 1960.)
