Hamburg-Harburg covers 161 km² (21% of the area of Hamburg), and has a population of 196,000.
Hamburg-Harburg lies on the southern shores of the river Elbe and covers large parts of Hamburg Harbour large residential areas and some research institutes. The large Techical University of Hamburg Harburg has a international reputation for its engineering faculties.
History
Until 1937 Harburg was an independent city, capital of the Prussian district of Harburg. Following the Groß-Hamburg-Gesetz (Greater Hamburg Act) Harburg, together with other cities such as Altona, was incorporated into the city of Hamburg.
