Adam Rapacki was a member of the Polish Socialist Party from 1945–1948. He then joined its successor, the Polish United Workers' Party, and was a member of the Politbureau of the Central Committee until 1968. He served as minister of seafaring and minister of higher education and research. On October 2, 1957, he presented at the United Nations his plan for a nuclear-free zone in Central Europe (comprising Czechoslovakia, Poland, East and West Germany). From 1956-1968 he was the foreign minister in the cabinet of Józef Cyrankiewicz.
