Jabba attempted to kill Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Chewbacca by throwing them into the Great Pit of Carkoon when after Han's attempted rescue. However, he was foiled when Luke Skywalker (with the help of R2D2) got a hold of his hidden lightsaber and broke free. In the ensuing skirmish, Han Solo inadvertently knocked bounty hunter Boba Fett into the Sarlacc's mouth. Meanwhile, his companions caused enough of a distraction to allow them all to escape from the clutches of Jabba the Hutt. Leia managed to use a barge cannon to blast at the barge, destroying it and everyone on it, including Jabba, Saelt Marae, and Ree-Yees. Some people who managed to escape were Bossk, Dengar, Tessek, the Max Rebo band, and Bib Fortuna.
Meanwhile, Wedge Antilles and Rogue Squadron attacked the Empire's gas platforms on Bespin to supply the Rebel fleet assembling near Sullust with Tibanna Gas.
In the Expanded Universe, Boba Fett managed to escape from the pit. He set off explosives from the inside, killing the Sarlacc. Fett was then found by a fellow bounty hunter, Dengar, after crawling out from the Sarlacc.
