The University of Wyoming is a land-grant university located in Laramie, Wyoming, nestled on Wyoming's high plains between the Laramie and Snowy Mountain ranges. The university first opened in September 1886 and is the only educational institution in Wyoming that offers bachelor's and graduate degrees. The university also offers outreach education in counties throughout Wyoming. UW combines major-university benefits and small-school advantages, with more than 180 programs of study, an outstanding faculty, and world-class research facilities all set against the idyllic backdrop of southeastern Wyoming's rugged mountains and high plains.
The University of Wyoming allows students to get a complete education and lets you gain experience in a chosen field through classroom learning, professional and academic student organizations, and professional experience. It can also involve exposing yourself to fields of study in entirely new areas, and simply being on your own. The university experience can force you to challenge conventional thinking and to generate your own ideas. UW is also a national research university, which means that even undergraduates can have hands-on experience in cutting-edge science research and scholarship. UW is a leader in the fields of environment and natural resource research, specializing in agriculture, energy, geology, and water resource related fields.
The University of Wyoming consists of seven colleges: Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, and Law. One of the University of Wyoming's main attractions, and the top example of Wyoming's commitment to an excellent education, is its low student-faculty ratio. Wyoming maintains a ratio of 12 students per faculty member, one of the lowest such ratios among four-year schools in the west. Such a ratio allows for a personal and informal learning relationship. The University of Wyoming recognizes the importance of a "classroom" education. At UW, the "whole" education is emphasized. The progressive and effective internship programs offered by UW's business and journalism programs are ways in which the university facilitates interaction with the "real world". With the "whole" education in mind, Wyoming also strives to offer a variety of cultural and social activities. Each semester, a variety of lectures and discussions are offered to supplement the educational process, and UW students are admitted free to university-sponsored theatrical and musical productions, as well as to UW's top-flight athletic programs.
The university offers a variety of performing arts events, ranging from rock concerts in the Arena Auditorium to classical concerts and performances by the University's theatre and dance department at the Fine Arts Center. Wyoming also boasts one of the most competitive athletic programs in the nation, one which annually challenges for conference and national championships. Wyoming offers many extracurricular activities, including over 150 recognized student organizations that include a wide range of social, professional and academic groups. The newly renovated Wyoming Union is the hub for the campus, featuring the University Bookstore, numerous eating establishments, computer workstations, and a recreation center. UW also has an extensive intramural athletic program that brings students and student groups together on the athletic fields. In addition, with the abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities at students’ doorsteps, such as skiing and hiking in the nearby mountains and its location to many national parks and forests, it’s easy to understand why Laramie was recently voted one of America’s top 40 college towns by Outside Magazine.
As the state's only four-year college, Wyoming considers its campus as extending over the entire state. Thus, the university is a college of personalities and lifestyles, bringing together people not only from Wyoming and the region, but from across America. The result is a unique and deep-rooted spirit. That spirit features a friendly, open demeanor, and a pride in the state and its beautiful University. From its historical roots near The Oregon Trail with pioneers heading west and as a railroad community in the middle-1800's, Laramie has grown to become one of the friendliest and most progressive cities on the western frontier, but one which has not become too big for its heritage. So here sits Wyoming's university, high on the Laramie plains in the Rocky Mountains, a school dedicated to excellence and to meeting the challenges facing the state today and tomorrow.

Athletics
The mascots of UW are known as "Cowboy Joe" and "Pistol Pete," and the athletic teams are cheered on by the unique fight song "Ragtime Cowboy Joe." Men's athletic teams are known as "Cowboys," and women's teams are called "Cowgirls."
Wyoming competes in NCAA Division I (I-A for football) as a member of the Mountain West Conference. In 2004 the Cowboy football team ended a 38-year streak of Bowl Game losses by defeating the University of California, Los Angeles in the Las Vegas Bowl on December 23.
Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium, capacity 32,580, was built in 1950 and remains one of the top football facilities in America. A beautiful artificial turf sets off this breathtaking stadium, which at an elevation of 7,220 feet is the highest Division I football stadium in America. With the crowd noise, elevation and outstanding Cowboy teams, Wyoming's home field has long been one of the most feared places to play in college football. The Cowboys have won over 69 percent of their games at War Memorial Stadium.
The Wyoming basketball teams have always enjoyed playing on the "Highest Courts" in the nation. Built in 1982 at a cost of $15 million, the Arena-Auditorium "Dome of Doom" seats over 15,000.
