Rajinikanth, fondly known as super-star, is the most popluar Tamil movie star, after MGR. He started his career in film industry from a humble begining as bus conductor.

Rajinikanth made his debut in the movie Apoorva Ragangal, in which he acted as a dying cancer patient. He followed it up with the role of a cruel womanizer, in Mundru Mudichu, that fetched him wide recoginiton. However, it was 16 Vayadhinile, that made him a overnight star. In the film he shared the screen with Kamal Hassan, another popular tamil actor.

Rajinikanth is well know for his style and mannerism, especially for the histrionics he does with cigarttes, guns and glasses. His most successful movies are Batcha, Dalapathi, Annamalai, Padyappa, Muthu, Thilu Mullu, Mullum Malarum and Mundru Mugam. Of these, Muthu was a success in Japan. Some of the popular characters he played are auto driver, mafia don, police cop, industrialist, villager and bull tamer.

Apart from films, Rajini plays a pivotal role in the Indian politics. In 1996, he was instrumental in overthrowing the then chief minister of Tamil Nadu, J Jayalalithaa, from power. Amidst speculations about him contesting the elections, he still contiues to act in films.
