Born in the state of Karnataka, India, on December 12, 1950, he started his career in film industry from humble begining as a bus conductor.
He made his debut in the movie Apoorva Ragangal, as a dying cancer patient, and followed it up with the role of a cruel womanizer, in Mundru Mudichu, that fetched him wide recoginiton. However, it was 16 Vayadhinile, that made him a overnight star. In the film he shared the screen with Kamal Hassan, another popular Tamil actor.
Rajinikanth is well know for his style and mannerism, especially for the histrionics he does with cigarttes, guns and glasses. He chooses characters that gell with common man, like that of an auto driver, a mafia don, or a labourer, though occasionally he plays urbane roles. His most successful movies are Batcha, Dalapathi, 'Annamalai, Padyappa, Muthu, Thilu Mullu, Mullum Malarum and Mundru Mugam. Of these, Muthu was a success in Japan too.
Apart from films, Rajinikanth plays a pivotal role in Indian politics. In 1996, he was instrumental in overthrowing the then chief minister of Tamil Nadu, J Jayalalithaa, from power. Amidst speculations about him contesting the elections, he still continues to act in films.
