Discussion
You cannot blank a page, or delete a large portion of its content, simply because you don't like what it says. This is being reported to WP:AN3 pm_shef 01:18, 25 February 2006 (UTC)
Theonlyedge 03:25, 4 January 2006 (UTC) I started this article. Can someone look for more information? Thanks.
2005 trustee candidacy?
How did he seek office as school trustee in 2005? There was no municipal general election that year, and I greatly doubt there'd have been a by-election. Did the previous trustee vacate the position, and Strelchik seek an appointment from the board? Samaritan 19:28, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
There was a by-election held in this area around that time but it was for city councillor not school trustee, I also know that the School Trustees position was also abandoned I don't recall a by-election for this position but the postion was filled, I think by appointment. Not sure how the process worked but I assume Strelchik was a candidate although I can not confirm this. I have no reason to believe that he wasn't a candidate.--Eyeonvaughan 20:23, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
As a result of Susan Kadis' election as an MP, she resigned from her position of Vaughan Councillor. Then, Alan Shefman won the election for Vaughan Councillor, and resigned as School Trustee. The School Trustee position was vacant, until the board chose to fill it, and held public meetings to elect the candidates. This is where Simon Strelchik faced Joel Hertz.
i tried
I tried to add things, but you removed them. Everything I wrote was 100% accurate!
70.27.42.86 00:13, 21 January 2006 (UTC) sorry, i don't remember that. someone should this new article too... and it seems biased in favor of Strelchik
Noteworthy
This guy is not nearly noteworthy enough to have a wiki page. The article is basically a gaint self-promotion. PM_shef
This article of Mr. Strelchik is very note worthy and from the tone of the unsigend (PM_shef) above sounds very politically motivated. Mr. Strelchik is currently President of the New Democratic Party of Canada EDA, he has been nominated for three Noble Peace Prize's and he was the candidate of record for the New Democratic Party of Canada in the Thornhill riding in the recent Canadian federal election. Please keep in mind that this request to delete was from the son of a candidate that ran against Mr. Strelchik in municipal election a number of years ago. Mr. Strelchik is more worthy of an article than PM_shef’s father, which he posted a while back.--67.70.148.49 21:00, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
- Oy. First off, let's lay off the ad hominem attacks. My past articles have nothing to do with this one. More importantly, stop making stuff up. Strelchik himself has not been nominated for any Nobel Peace Prizes. FTC has been and Kielburger has been, Strelchik hasn't, so let's stick to the facts. Second, according to wiki's general bio guidelines, Riding Association Presidents aren't noteworthy enough to have an article. Neither are candidates who simply run and lose over and over again. Finally, my musing on deletion was agreed to in principle by the original author of this article. If you really think i shouldn't make this a VfD, explain to me, without trying to insult my credibility, why this article deserves to be here. Oh and also, don't create headings for every single post. This can all be under the general heading of Noteworthy. pm_shef 21:39, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
Theonlyedge 22:50, 14 February 2006 (UTC) Okay, I edited the article. It should be a little less biased in favor of Strelchik, and also shorter. But it still needs some work. It really only deserves three sentences.
- Hear Hear. The fact is, when the guy has accomplished something noteworthy (ie. get elected to public office, start his own NGO, etc, etc) then I'll be more than happy to give him an article pm_shef 03:33, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
My version explained
Okay, here's everything I left out:
- "Simon is a community leader:" In this context I believe it violates Misplaced Pages:Avoid peacock terms. His leadership on anti-smoking, with Free The Children, as an NDP activist, etc. comes out in the concrete facts in the article.
- An expansion on Free The Children that repeats content from their article. The article is about Strelchik, not the organization.
- "Awarded the teachers' OSSTF award for outstanding involvement both in the community and in the school at his Graduation, Simon is involved in his community." High-school graduation awards are really almost never notable enough for an encyclopedia article.
- "Simon regularly attends the proceedings of the Parliament of Ontario, and has done so since 1996." Besides the fact that it's the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, any member of the public is free to attend. Although perhaps a commendable hobby, this is still a hobby. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to leave it in, just... seems a bit overdone. If he's made a notable deputations to a committee of the legislature or anything, perhaps that would merit note?
- Anything referring to him by first name. This is an encyclopedia article.
And I added his candidacy for the Ontario NDP provincial executive, certainly as notable as much else here – he stood for exec at least once, I know from personal memory (the subject and I have travelled in the same circles). I'll describe his involvement in ONDY a bit more generously.
Otherwise, all the changes I made were completely content-neutral copyediting to meet Misplaced Pages style, adding helpful links to an article that was badly short of them, the essential categories Category:Living people and Category:People from York Region, Ontario etc. If it's going to be reverted again, please explain why? Deletion
I've changed the article again. Its now a bit shorter, and, again, less biased. I'll edit it down again soon. \
It comes down to the fact thsat Strelchik really isn't a very important guy (according to Misplaced Pages standards). Perhaps he is worth a page, but a very quick, consise, and un-biased one.
