Djent is a movement in the underground metal scene. The word itself is derived from the sound of a palm muting technique. It was coined by Fredrik Thordendal of Meshuggah and is generally considered to have been made popular by Misha Mansoor of Periphery. Typically the word is used to refer to music that makes use of this sound or the sound itself, but controversy still exists about it's exact usage.
