In general it has spiritual or mystical themes, or is based in such experiences. Many well known visionary artists have drawn inspiration from psychedelic drugs, although this is not a prerequisite.
The American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland is dedicated to the collection and display of such artwork.
More generally visionary art refers to art that attempts to transcend the physical world and portray a greater vision of reality. Contemporary visionary artists count Hieronymous Bosch and William Blake amongst their antecedents. The transcendental nature of this style of art links it with psychedelic art, and the visionary aspect ties it with the surrealists.
