Jabba is of the race Hutt and like most of his species, he is a gangster. He loaned Han Solo a large sum of money before episode 4 A New Hope and puts a price on Han's head which is collected between episodes 5 and 6 by Boba Fett.
In episode 6, Return of the Jedi, Luke Skywalker enters Jabba's palace to free Han Solo.
