Budget and Box Office

  • Budget: $6 million
  • Box Office Receipts: $49 million (as of March 7, 2006)

The film grossed $30 million in its opening weekend (enough to land first place for that week), 38 percent higher than the original Diary and the second highest opening in the history of independent studio Lions Gate Films.

According to Lions Gate officials, Reunion, like Diary before it, were marketed heavily toward black Christian audiences.

"I believe that we're in all the right theaters," said Steve Rothenberg, Lions Gate president of domestic distribution. "I'm not sure there's much room for expansion."

He points to company exit polling data regarding the distribution as evidence of that point. The polls indicate that 52 percent of the receipts come from black women over 35, suggesting that the decision of the studio to sign an agreement to make motion picture versions of each of Perry's Madea stage plays was a good one that will likely pay off in the long run.

The next Madea film is expected to be released in early 2007.
