Originally, just the various Military Orders took this as a donation symbolising the cost of the passage to the Holy Land (called the droit de passage), which indicated the new knight's willingness to go on Crusade. This eventually transfered to other orders and, over time, has become the norm for state orders of knighthood and of chivalry.
