R. Martin. It is the best-known of his works, and has spawned a successful trading card game.
A Clash of Kings is set in a fictitious world reminiscent of Europe in the Middle Ages (primarily on a continent called Westeros), except for the fact that in this world, seasons can last decades. The tale is told through the point of view of 9 main characters:
- Lady Catelyn Stark, of House Tully, widow of Eddard Stark
- Princess Sansa Stark, eldest daughter of Eddard Stark and Catelyn Stark, held captive by the King on the Iron Throne at King's Landing
- Princess Arya Stark, youngest daughter of Eddard Stark and Catelyn Stark, missing and presumed dead
- Prince Brandon Stark, called Bran, son of Eddard Stark and Catelyn Stark, and heir to the North
- Jon Snow, bastard son of Eddard Stark
- Tyrion Lannister, youngest son of Tywin Lannister, a dwarf, heir to Casterly Rock
- Ser Davos Seaworth, a smuggler turned knight
- Theon Greyjoy, heir to the Seastone Chair and former ward of Lord Eddard Stark
- Queen Daenerys Targaryen, Stormborn, of the Targaryen Dynasty
Plot
In the second book from A Song of Ice and Fire, we find Westeros ravaged by war, kings in every area of the kingdom, the extinct species of dragons reborn, and the Black Brothers in utter desolation against the seemingly limitless hordes of wildlings commanded by the King Beyond the Wall. Dealing with the Stark family's lives after the death of Eddard, the Lannisters' rise to power, and the ever changing future of Daenerys Stormborn, A Clash of Kings takes the plot of the first book even higher.
