Chet Culver, Iowa Secretary of State.

Chet Culver (Chester John Culver) (born 1965) is the current Secretary of State in the U.S. state of Iowa and a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Governor of Iowa in 2006.

Background

Chet Culver is the son of former US Senator John Culver. He attended college at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University in Blacksburg, Virginia, where he earned a B.A. in political science. Culver then worked as a lobbyist for two years in 1989 and 1990. His clients during this time included the Iowa Trial Lawyers Association, and Des Moines University.

Culver studied briefly at Drake Law School before earning a masters degree in education from Drake University. Culver taught high school in Des Moines, Iowa prior to election as Secretary of State in 1998. Many have noticed a strong resemblance between Culver and Mr. Incredible from the movie "The Incredibles."

He currently resides in West Des Moines, Iowa with his wife Mariclare Thinnes Culver and their two children, Clare Honour and John William. He attends Central Presbyterian church in West Des Moines, where he serves as a church elder.

Gubenatorial Race

Culver's main opponents for the Democratic nomination are former director of the Iowa Department of Economic Development Mike Blouin and seven term State Representative Ed Fallon. Secretary of Agriculture Patty Judge was also running for the nomination but withdrew to become Culver's runningmate.

He is expected to win the nomination. Jim Nussle is the expected Republican opponent. Chet Culver's straight-arrow family-value nature will be contrasted to Jim Nussle's messy, adultry-drenched divorce.
