'Aziz Sergeyevich Shavershian' (March 23 1989 – August 5, 2011) was an Australian amateur bodybuilder who attracted a large online following. His flamboyant lifestyle came to be symbolized by the assumed 'Zyzz' persona; also the nickname by which he was commonly known.
Early life
Aziz was born March 23rd 1989 in Moscow, Soviet Union. His family background were a mix of Kurdish, Armenian and Persian. Before Aziz started working out during his highschool years, he was an avid World of Warcraft player and was in the top 100 PVP players in Australia. He graduated high school with a UAI ranking score of 86.3.
Bodybuilding
At 17 Aziz sold his World of Warcraft account and used the funds to purchase a membership at his local gymnasium. Describing his figure upon school graduation as "ridiculously thin", he said the decision to train came after attending adult nightclubs, "I started going clubbing every weekend and always noticed whenever a jacked dude walked by, they had a presence a lot greater than that of a 'normal' person. The guys respect them, and the girls are all over them, and really, who wouldn’t want that?". He also cited his older brother's progress in the gym as a motivation.
His progress over the next few years inspired a burgeoning online presence at popular bodybuilding discussion forums at BodyBuilding.com. The significant transformation of his previously thin build into a muscular, 'shredded' (low fat) physique appealed to many younger fans who admired the contrasting images of his past and present images. Many cited his progress as their inspiration for their own dedication to training.
Known also for his forum trolling, 'Zyzz' and his fellow gym fanatics would use their own unique style of language; frequently using the terms 'mirin' and 'jelly'. Those in admiration of another's physique were said to be 'mirin' and those jealous were said to be 'jelly'. 'Zyzz' described himself as the "Son of Zeus. Brother of Hercules. Father of Aesthetics", a line often repeated by his fans in reference to him. His vociferous exploits eventually resulted in his account being banned from the forum.
The physically developed 'Zyzz' emphasized aesthetics as his training goal, "My end goal is not to be some massed up freak, but rather to have a physique that can be looked as art; streamlined, tapered, and universally appealing". A keen fan of trance music he would often attend rave style dance parties where his muscular physique and outgoing personality made him a popular identity.
Death
On August 5, 2011, Aziz was found unconscious in a spa service in Bangkok, Thailand, where he was then on holiday. He was rushed to the Camillian Private Hospital where an unsuccessful attempt to revive him was made. He was declared deceased at the age of 22. An autopsy report described the causes of death as cardiomegaly (enlarged heart) and sudden cardiopulmonary failure. He had not previously been diagnosed as suffering from a cardiac condition.
Upon announcement of his death the online community at the Misc section of the BodyBuilding.com forums had posted over 18,000 posts in the 'RIP' threads created in his memory. As of August 17, 2011, over 88,0000 people had expressed a 'Like' of his 'Zyzz' Facebook page.
Drug Use Controversy
3 weeks prior to Aziz's death, his brother Said, known by the nickname Chestbrah, was charged with steroid possession after a series of police raids across Sydney. The community Aziz was popular with would commonly use coded jargon to discuss illegal performance enhancing drug use, with the term "bicycle" being used in reference to a steroid cycle.
