Gatchina is the former seasonal residence of the Russian emperors in the vicinity of St. Petersburg. It is also home to a small palace on the shore of the "Black Lake", which is known as "Priory Palace" or "Gatchina Palace". Constructed for the Russian Grand Priory of the Order of St John, it was presented to the Order by a decree of Paul I dated 23 August 1799.
