The Artful Dodger is a British band, who became famous through their 2Step hits and gave Craig David's career a boost after he appeared on their #2 hit "Rewind" in December 1999. The band's name was apparently stolen from an unknown bedroom DJ (popular on Pirate Radio Stations) Lee Haynes whos fathers name was Roger, which was inspired by the Artful Dodger, a character in the Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist. The band originally consisted of Mark Hill and Pete Devereux, but Devereux left prior to the release of the single "TwentyFourSeven", and Hill continued from then on to produce records under the Artful Dodger moniker by himself.
All of their subsequent hit singles have also been collaborations:
- "Movin' Too Fast" featuring Romina Johnson (#2 in March 2000),
- "Woman Trouble" featuring Robbie Craig and Craig David (#6 in July 2000),
- "Please Don't Turn Me On" featuring Lindon Clifford (#4 in November 2000),
- "Think About Me" featuring Michelle Escoffery (#11 in March 2001), and
- "TwentyFourSeven" featuring All Saints member Melanie Blatt (#6 in September 2001).
The Artful Dodger are associated with Pete Tong's FFRR Records label.
