The Republican party is a United States political party started in the 1850s as an anti-slavery party. (It is not to be confused with the Democratic-Republican party of Thomas Jefferson). It was formed in the 1850s from the ashes of the Whig Party. Since the 1970s, the Republican Party is considered to be politically to the right of the United States Democratic Party.
