Poplar and Limehouse is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) using the first past the post system of election.
This seat was created following the review of parliamentary representation in North London by the Boundary Commission for England; and first contested in the 2010 general election.
Boundaries
The electoral wards used to create the new seat of Poplar and Limehouse are entirely within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. A number of alternative names, including "Tower Hamlets South" and "Poplar and Millwall" were rejected following public consultation.
- The constituency comprises the wards of Blackwall and Cubitt Town, Bromley-by-Bow, East India and Lansbury, Limehouse, Mile End East, Millwall, St Katharine’s and Wapping, & Shadwell.
- The seat is almost exclusively within the boundaries of the old Poplar and Canning Town constituency, with the only new additions being the western end of Shadwell Ward and the whole of St Katharine's & Wapping Ward which used to be part of Bethnal Green and Bow.
- The areas of the old Poplar and Canning Town seat within the London Borough of Newham were moved from the seat and transferred into East Ham (5.1% of Poplar and Canning Town) and West Ham (24.9%).
Constituency profile
This east London seat covers the Isle of Dogs and the Canary Wharf development. To the north it covers Bromley-by-Bow and the Eastern half of Mile End, once home to a Jewish community, now dominated by Bangladeshi Muslims. To the west it stretches up to the boundaries of the City of London, and includes the Tower of London. The tower at One Canada Square, until 2010 the tallest building in the UK, is another landmark within the seat.
This is a seat of contrasts, from extreme deprivation in the north of the constituency to the gleaming skyscrapers and dockside developments of Canary Wharf in the south (although even in the areas surrounding Canary Wharf there are still working class areas).
