Duraković was born in Stolac on 1 January 1949. He was the last leader of League of Communists of Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1989 to 1990 and the first president of Social Democratic Party of Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1990 to 1997. He was the candidate on the Bosnia and Herzegovina first general election in 1990. In 1992 he became a member of the War Presidency of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Except politics, his work includes 16 books and more than 200 scientific articles which he wrote while he was a Professor on the Faculty of Political Sciences, University of Sarajevo. His most known book is The Curse of Muslims (Prokletstvo Muslimana). Duraković died on 29 January 2012 in Sarajevo by heart failure.
