Baby Boom is an iconic term specific to the dramatic post world war two population expansion (notice the rate of change on the accompanying chart) and in the same sense a generational term refering to the persons born during that iconic era. It is however, also a general demographic term and is also applied to other similar population expansions. Persons born during this period are often called baby boomers.

Many such instances have been recorded in human history and are often caused by uplifting factors such as good harvests, victories in sport or war, or just due to superstition. Some contest the general conventional wisdom that baby booms signify good times and periods of general economic growth and stability, but this is a controversial position that ignores much of the well document historical record from the 1500s to present.
