Simpson has played the character Cecilia on the television show 7th Heaven since 2002; it was announced in June 2004 that she will end that role. She was also a dancer in her sister's concerts. Simpson's own music career began with the recording of her first album, Autobiography, which was released on July 20, 2004. Her first single is the song "Pieces of Me", which she has said was written about her boyfriend, Ryan Cabrera.
Simpson is the subject of a reality show on MTV, The Ashlee Simpson Show, which debuted on June 16, 2004 and deals with the process of creating the album.
