The game, based on the Quake III Arena engine, simulates infantry combat in the European and North African Theaters during World War II. The title derives from the notion that the likelihood of completing the game's missions, in real-life, would be about as likely as earning the Medal of Honor, perhaps even less likely. Single player missions include assaulting Algiers in North Africa, and storming the beaches of Normandy on Omaha Beach through machine gun fire.
There is an expansion pack named Spearhead, in which the player, as the fictional Sgt. Jack Barnes, paratrooper of the 501 P.I.R., 101st Airborne, fights in Normandy, holds the line in the Battle of the Bulge, and captures Berlin with the Soviet army. Spearhead was developed by 2015.
Breakthrough is the second expansion pack for the Medal of Honor Allied Assault game series set in World War II. This campaign covers Kasserine Pass, the turning point of the North African campaign, the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943, the epic race to Messina between Patton's 7th Army and Montgomery's 8th, followed by the amphibious landings and defense of the beachhead at Anzio. The Breakthrough expansion was developed by TKO Software for EA Games.
