In 1988, Morgan became the evening meteorologist for KOCO-TV, the ABC affiliate in Oklahoma City and worked there until 1992, before moving to KFOR-TV in 1993.
Morgan was presented with the Humanitarian Award by former Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating for KFOR's coverage of the 1999 Oklahoma tornado outbreak on May 3, 1999. Mike has spent his entire life tracking Oklahoma weather; chasing his first Oklahoma tornadoes at the age of 10 with his father. Mike began interning at the Oklahoma National Weather Service office at the age of 13 years and during his 2 year internship learned how to operate weather radar at the age of 15. The Meteorologist in Charge (MIC) of the Tulsa NWS at the time was Ben Barker, the deputy MIC was Lloyd Spyres, forecaster JT Ray. Mike's internship information is confirmed. Mike's career in Oklahoma broadcasting began also at the age of 15 with an internship with Chief Meteorologist Don Woods of KTUL Channel 8 ABC. His first on air media job began as weekend PM anchor at KJRH TV2 NBC at the age of 17 under Chief Meteorologist Gary Shore (Meteorology masters degree, Penn State) while still in high school. His early TV career helped to put him thru college at OU in Norman in the highly recognized school of Meteorology and Geosciences. Mike's Meteorology career in Oklahoma now spans over 35 years and is a trusted source for accurate and timely weather information for all Oklahomans.
And, in 2012, the National Weather Service in Norman Oklahoma solicited Mike for KFOR-TV off air severe weather and tornado coverage from May 24th, 2011. The NWS was conducting a study on how to improve the warning process and wanted Mike's coverage to study to potentially improve their own warning process. Being a former intern with the NWS, Mike was glad to help.
There is conflicting information of whether Mike has interned with the National Weather Service in Tulsa as his bio claims. According to the federal Office of Personnel Management, a meteorologist interning with the National Weather Service must have a minimum of a BS in Meteorology or Atmospheric Sciences prior. Mike has never completed a degree in meteorology, as his degree is in Geography. As a result, he is not qualified to work as a intern with the National Weather Service at present time, nor was he when he was 13.
