Confederate forces under the command of General William Hardee entrenched around the village of Averasboro just north of Fayetteville, North Carolina in order to make a brief delaying defense against advancing Federal armies under teh command of Major General William T. Sherman. Although it was not a heavily contested engagement it resulted in some 682 Union casualties and some 500 Confederate. More importantly it provided General Joseph E. Johnston time to rebuild the Army of Tennessee and prepare its final stand at the Battle of Bentonville. Following these major battles, the Confederates fought a final withdrawing action in the town of Morrisville Station where they were forced in retreat toward Greensboro, North Carolina. Following these battles in North Carolina General Johnston sent a courier to the Federal encampments at Morrisville with a message to Major General Sherman requesting a conference to discuss an armistice. Several days later the two generals met at Bennett Place on April 17, 1865 to begin discussing the terms of what would become the largest surrender of the American Civil War.
