Template:Resident Evil character Osmund Saddler is a fictional character and the main antagonist in the video game, Resident Evil 4. A powerful religious figure, he was responsible for spreading a deadly plague that turned an entire village into mindless automatons under his control. Saddler's many underlings include village chief Bitores Mendez, castle lord Ramon Salazar and super mercenary Jack Krauser. He is also responsible for the creation of several mutated creatures (such El Gigante, Del Lago and the Regenerators) that resulted from genetic experiments with the Plaga parasites.

Saddler's voice was provided by voice actor Michael Gough.

Background

Template:Spoiler Osmund Saddler is the leader of a religious cult in Europe known as "Los Iluminados" (from Spanish, The Illuminated), which seeks to overthrow the U.S. government in order to reshape the world to their vision. He was successful in unleashing "Las Plagas" parasites, which remained dormant in the Salazar family's castle, by brainwashing the eighth castellan, Ramon, to do his bidding. The two contracted miners from a nearby village to excavate the seal on the parasites. Due to years of lying dormant, the parasites had since formed into a spore-like substance, which infected the miners and later spread to the rest of the local villagers, transforming them into mind-controlled creatures known as "Los Ganados" (The Cattle). Saddler was also capable of controlling the Ganados using a specialized Master Plaga vial, called the "Sample" and what appeared to be a living ceremonial rod made from one of the parasites.

In 2004, Saddler hired mercenary Jack Krauser to kidnap the U.S. President's daughter, Ashley Graham, as part of a plot to inject her with a Plaga egg and send her back to the U.S. under his control, under the guise of holding her for ransom.

However, Ashley's whereabouts were leaked to the U.S. by female spy Ada Wong and agent Leon S. Kennedy was sent on a rescue mission to find her. During his mission, Leon was injected with the Plaga parasite by Saddler himself while he was unconscious under captivity. This gave Saddler partial control of Leon, in addition to Ashley, as the parasites within their bodies grew. Saddler was also responsible for the death of Luis Sera, one of the researchers hired to study Las Plagas who betrayed Saddler upon learning the true nature of the research.

Leon managed to free Ashley from Saddler's clutches with Ada's help and the two found an Anti-Plaga Radiation Device within Saddler's island base, removing their parasites and thus, foiling Saddler's plans. After Leon saved Ashley, Saddler showed his abnormal super speed and strength in battle against Ada, but was still defeated. When Ada had her back turned, Saddler used his spear-like tentacle to knock her out and hold her captive during the final battle. Leon and Saddler confronted each other for the last time and Saddler, upon realizing that Leon had destroyed the parasite in his body, engaged Leon in combat, mutating into a hideous giant spider-like creature. On each of his four legs, as well as in his mouth, was a large eye, each of which were apparent vulnerabilities. With Ada's help, Leon succeeded in killing Saddler, finishing off the battle with a specialized rocket launcher that Ada threw to him. In the game, it is also possible to not use the specialized rocket laucher to kill him, though it takes more hits to do so. It gets easier to do this when you obtained the Infinite rocket laucher (which is only avialible after you beat the game the first time).

Appearance

In keeping with the general medieval theme, Saddler wears a priest-like robe. His skin is fairly gray and his irises are completely white. Some note a similarity to Emperor Palpatine of Star Wars fame.
