Barneville-Carteret is a commune in the Manche department in the Basse-Normandie region in north-western France. It is situated on the western coast of the Cotentin peninsula some 30 km south of Cherbourg. It consists of three small urban areas, Barneville Bourg, Barneville Plage and Carteret. The principal economic activities are tourism, farming and fishing.

The area has been settled since neolithic times - there is evidence of settlement on Cap Carteret, which defines the western extremity of the commune.

His(Her,Its) 2,282 inhabitants is " Barnevillais (are) " and " Carteretais (are) ". Every year, of the end of June, at the beginning of September, the population of the municipality exceeds(overtakes) 10 000 people.

Situated in front of Channel Islands (Écréhou, Jersey, Sercq, Herm, Aurigny, Minquiers, Guernsey, and Chausey) Barneville-Carteret is a sea resort estimated(appreciated) by a cosmopolitan clientele: Frenchman(French people), Englishman(English people) and Jersey, Belgian, German … The population of the municipality increases tenfold during the summer season, attracted, among others, by the marina (311 posts(post offices) in pond, 60 places visitors and 95 places in grounding). The activity of the peach(fishing) is important and diversified since the fishing port; fishes: brill, pout, dogfish, but especially shellfishes: spiders, cakes and the famous lobster of Carteret. The activities are numerous: bathing and nautical activities, fishing from the shore (on the beach(range) of Barneville, in the low tide in rocks or sand, it is possible to collect(harvest) limpets, hulls(shells), buccins, winkles, crabs, velvet swimming crabs(currycombs), shrimps … In the forefront(at the tip) of Carteret, it is possible to find deep.), gone hiking in dunes, golf and horse …

Middle Ages

Port of Carteret

The Port of Carteret is the present port of Barneville-Carteret. Sometimes called a "port of isles", it is situated in the harbour of Carteret, on the right bank of the mouth of the Gerfleur, at the end of the cape of Carteret.

A rescue station was built in 1865. The big pier and the south dike were completed in 1880; the following year, a connection was created with Jersey.
