Mary O'Neil McCarthy of Bethesda, Maryland, is or was a CIA Analyst. She was reportedly fired April 21, 2006 for leaking classified information to The Washington Post.
Career
McCarthy began working for the CIA in 1984, as an analyst in the Directorate of Intelligence. She served as the Deputy National Intelligence Officer for Warning from 1991 to 1994; and as National Intelligence Officer for Warning from 1994 to 1996.
Following her service as National Intelligence Officer for Warning, McCarthy served as Director of Intelligence Programs on the National Security Council Staff. In 1998, disgraced former National Security Advisor for President Clinton Sandy Berger, later criminally sentenced for also mishandling classified documents, appointed her as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Intelligence Programs.
Leak Scandal
Note: Although the CIA has not released the name of the informant, other governmental sources have reported that she is the dismissed officer.
On April 21, 2006 McCarthy was dismissed from her job with the CIA for releasing classified material to The Washington Post. This happened after she failed a polygraph examination, and then admitted to revealing classified information. McCarthy reportedly had leaked information to the Washington Post's Dana Priest on several occasions.
According to NBC, some of the leaked classified material pertained to special wartime agreements between the U.S. and Eastern European nations to host prisoners captured in the U.S.' Global "War on Terror" that commenced September 14, 2001 following the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
U.S. government officials have said the wartime disclosure did "significant damage to relationships between the U.S. and allied intelligence agencies." Criminal charges are pending.
